What it pays
Crane operating pays well for a trade you can enter without a college degree. Per the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2024, Crane and Tower Operators, SOC 53-7021), the median is roughly $66,000 a year (about $31 to $32/hr), with the lowest 10% near $40,000 and the top 10% near or above $99,000. The average (mean) runs a bit higher than the median because top earners pull it up. Union operating engineers and tower/specialty operators in high-cost cities are typically at the top end. Pay rises fast with certification, experience, and the ability to run bigger and more specialized cranes.
Overtime is huge in this trade and can add a lot to a paycheck. Union (IUOE) jobs add employer-paid fringe benefits often worth $15 to $25+/hr on top of base wages (health insurance, pension, and annuity). Out-of-town and shutdown work often pays per-diem (daily travel and living money) plus travel pay. Pay varies a lot by state, by how big and specialized the crane is, and by union vs. non-union. Tower and crawler crane operators on major projects are among the highest earners. Note that headline 'average crane operator' salary numbers from job-board sites are often inflated above the BLS figures, so treat the BLS data as the reliable baseline.
What they do
A crane operator runs heavy lifting machines that pick up and move loads too big or too heavy for any person or forklift to handle. You sit in the cab and use levers, pedals, and joysticks to hoist, swing, and place loads, from a single steel beam to a 40-ton chiller going on a rooftop, often working blind and relying on a signal person on the ground to guide you.
The work splits into a few worlds. Mobile crane operators run cranes that drive or get hauled to the job (truck, rough-terrain, all-terrain, crawler) and move between many different sites. Tower crane operators run the tall fixed cranes you see over high-rise construction. Overhead (bridge) crane operators work indoors in factories, steel mills, and warehouses. Each takes its own skills and, often, its own certification.
Who hires crane operators: general and specialty construction contractors, crane rental companies (which own the cranes and rent them with an operator), steel erectors and ironworking outfits, refineries and chemical plants, power plants and wind-farm builders, shipyards and ports, manufacturers, and utilities. Many operators are union members of the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE).
The throughline of the whole job is responsibility. You are the last line of defense between a routine lift and a fatal accident. A good operator is precise, calm, disciplined about inspections and load charts, and willing to stop a lift cold when something is not right.
A typical day
- Show up early and do a documented daily inspection of the crane: check wire rope (cable) for fraying or kinks, hydraulics for leaks, tires or tracks, outriggers, brakes, hooks and latches, and that all the safety devices and alarms work.
- Review the day's lift plan with the crew and the lift director: what's being picked, how heavy, how far out (the radius), and where it's going. Check the load chart so you never exceed the crane's rated capacity for that boom length and radius.
- Set up the crane: level it, fully extend and pad the outriggers, and confirm the ground underneath can take the weight. Bad setup is the number-one cause of cranes tipping over.
- Run lifts all shift, taking hand signals or radio calls from a signal person and rigger because you often can't see the load or the landing spot. Move loads smoothly with no sudden swings, and only one person gives you signals at a time.
- Watch for hazards constantly: overhead power lines (you have to keep a minimum clearance), wind picking up, other equipment and people in the swing radius, and the crane's own stability and load chart limits.
- Communicate nonstop on the radio with the ground crew, keep your eyes moving, and shut it down if anything feels wrong. A good operator says 'no' when a lift isn't safe, and that call is respected, not punished.
- Fill out logs and inspection paperwork, fuel and grease the machine, and secure it at the end of the shift (boom down or locked, swing brake set, controls off).
- On a tower crane, climb up the ladder at the start of shift and stay in the cab most of the day, with bathroom and lunch breaks planned around being 200 feet up.
Where you work
Mostly outdoors and exposed to the weather: heat, cold, wind, rain, and sun. Wind is a real factor because it can shut a lift down entirely (manufacturers set wind limits, often around 20 to 28 mph for the load). You'll be on active construction sites, refineries, ports, or inside loud factories. Hours are often long, with overtime common, and shifts can start before dawn. Construction work can be seasonal and weather-dependent in colder regions, so winter can mean slow stretches and layoffs between jobs.
Tower crane operators spend the day high off the ground in a small cab and need to be okay with heights and isolation. Mobile operators may travel a lot, sometimes living in hotels or campers for weeks on out-of-town jobs, and shutdown (plant turnaround) and storm/disaster work can mean intense travel stretches.
Physically it's less brutal than some trades since you're seated, but you deal with vibration, awkward climbing to get into and out of cabs and onto equipment, full-body sun and weather exposure, and long periods of intense focus. The bigger toll is mental: significant stress from the responsibility of moving heavy loads over people. Real hazards include tip-overs, dropped loads, power line contact (a leading cause of crane operator deaths), being struck by or caught in the load or equipment, and falls during climbing. Standard safety gear is a hard hat, steel-toe boots, hi-vis, eye and hearing protection, and a fall-arrest harness for climbing.
How to get in
There are three realistic ways in: a union apprenticeship (best pay and training, but very competitive to get into), a private crane operator school followed by getting hired, or starting on a construction crew as a laborer/oiler/rigger/signal person and working your way into the seat. Almost everyone, regardless of path, has to earn a nationally recognized operator certification (most commonly NCCCO/CCO) because OSHA requires certification by an accredited body for cranes with a rated capacity over 2,000 lbs. The fastest, surest entry is usually: get hired or get into an apprenticeship, earn your certification, then build hours on real equipment.
The gold-standard path. The International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) runs registered apprenticeships through local training centers that combine paid on-the-job hours with classroom and hands-on crane training, and they prepare you for and usually cover the cost of your operator certification (through NCCCO or the IUOE's own OECP program). You earn while you learn and come out as a well-paid journeyman with full benefits. Slots are limited and competitive, so apply early and keep applying.
A private trade school or training company teaches you to run cranes and preps you for the NCCCO written and practical exams. A good option when no apprenticeship slot is open. The catch: a certificate alone doesn't make you an operator. You still need to land a job, log real hours, and pass your employer's evaluation before you'll be trusted with serious lifts and top pay. Vet the school's reputation and job-placement record before paying.
Get hired by a crane rental company or contractor as a ground worker, oiler (the operator's helper who greases, fuels, and assists on the crane), rigger, or signal person. You learn the equipment, prove you're reliable, and the company trains and certifies you to move into the operator's seat over time. This is the most accessible entry point with no upfront cost.
Apprenticeships
Length: Typically 3 to 4 years, combining roughly 6,000 hours of paid on-the-job training with several hundred hours of classroom and hands-on instruction (exact hours vary by IUOE local and region).
Earn while you learn: You're paid from day one and get raises as you advance. Union (IUOE) apprentices typically start around 50 to 65% of the local journeyman wage and step up in stages (often roughly to 70%, 80%, then 90%) as you complete hours and skill benchmarks, until you hit full journeyman scale, plus employer-paid health and pension benefits along the way. The exact percentages and steps differ by local.
How to find one: Search the U.S. Department of Labor's tool at apprenticeship.gov (the Apprenticeship Job Finder) for 'crane operator' or 'operating engineer.' Contact your nearest International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) local hall and ask about its apprenticeship and training center and the next intake date. Also check crane rental companies and large contractors, some of which run their own registered apprenticeships, and Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) chapters for non-union programs.
Certifications
The core credential for running mobile cranes (telescopic truck/boom, rough-terrain, lattice boom truck, and lattice boom crawler). Exam fees run roughly $140 to $300+ depending on how many specialties you add, on top of any training. This is the certification most employers ask for by name.
Specialized certification for the fixed tower cranes used on high-rise and large building projects, where operators are among the highest paid.
Covers cab-operated, pendant, and remote-operated overhead (bridge) cranes used indoors in industrial settings.
Certifies you to rig (attach and balance) loads safely and to direct the operator with hand and radio signals. Many operators start their careers here.
A nationally accredited crane operator certification recognized by OSHA. Good to know it exists so you understand NCCCO is the most common credential but not the only legal one (CIC and NCCER also run OSHA-accepted programs).

Licensing
At the federal level, OSHA (rule 29 CFR 1926.1427) requires construction crane operators to be trained, certified by an accredited body (NCCCO, CIC, NCCER, or OECP), and then separately evaluated and documented by their employer for the specific equipment and tasks they'll perform. Certification alone does not make you 'qualified' in OSHA's eyes; your employer must sign off on you too. On top of that, many states and big cities add their own operator license requirements. So in practice you usually need BOTH a national certification AND, where required, a state or city license.
Licensing rules vary by state - check your state board.
Education
Minimum: No college required. A high school diploma or GED is the standard expectation, and you must be at least 18. You need to be able to read, do practical math (weights, geometry, percentages), and read load charts, which are the tables that tell you how much a crane can lift at a given boom length and radius. You'll also need to pass a drug test and a physical, including a vision check.
Helps: A trade/vocational crane operator school or heavy-equipment program (a few weeks to a few months) can get you certification-ready and into a seat faster. Community college heavy-equipment or construction programs help too. A commercial driver's license (CDL) is a big plus and sometimes required for mobile operators who drive the crane to the site. Basic mechanical and hydraulic knowledge, rigging knowledge, and OSHA 10/30 safety training are all valuable and make you more hireable.

Steady, with strong replacement demand. Crane and tower operators fall under the BLS material moving machine operators group, projected to grow about 1% from 2024 to 2034 (slower than average for total numbers), but with around 83,200 openings a year across the broader group, mostly from operators retiring or moving to other work. The skilled, certified end of the trade, especially operators who can run multiple crane types, is in genuinely short supply.
Total employment growth is modest on paper, but a wave of experienced operators is aging out and retiring, and there aren't enough trained replacements coming up behind them. Big spending on infrastructure (roads, bridges, the power grid), data centers, semiconductor and manufacturing plants, and renewable energy (wind turbines need very large cranes) keeps real demand for qualified operators high. Honest caveat: this is project-driven work, so demand is cyclical and tied to construction spending and the local economy. When a region's projects dry up or interest rates slow building, hours can get thin, which is exactly why mobility and multiple certifications keep you working. Certified operators who can run several crane types and are willing to travel rarely sit idle for long.
