What it pays
Electricians earn solidly above the national average wage, and you get paid the entire time you train. The U.S. median was $62,350 a year (about $29.97/hour) in May 2024 per the BLS. The lowest 10% earned under $39,430; the highest 10% earned over $106,030. Pay climbs a lot with a journeyman and especially a master license, with overtime, and with specialization (industrial, lineman, and high-voltage pay the most). Union (IBEW) scale in major metros is often well above these national medians.
Overtime (1.5x or 2x) is common and can add tens of thousands a year. Union (IBEW) jobs add pension and health benefits on top of the hourly check, plus negotiated scale that beats the national median in most big cities. Industrial shutdowns and storm/utility work pay premiums and per-diem when you travel. Pay varies a lot by region: the same license earns far more in California, New York, Illinois, or Washington than in lower-cost rural states. EV-charger, solar, and battery-storage work is a fast-growing higher-pay niche.
What they do
An electrician installs, maintains, and repairs the electrical systems that power everything around us. That means the wiring inside walls, the breaker panel in the garage, the lights and outlets, the wiring for HVAC and appliances, and in bigger jobs the controls for machines, motors, and entire factories. You read blueprints, run wire (called "pipe" or conduit when it is in metal tubing), connect it to panels and devices, and make sure it all works safely and meets code. When something stops working or trips, you are the person who figures out why and fixes it.
There are a few worlds inside this trade. Residential electricians work on houses and apartments. Commercial electricians wire offices, stores, schools, and hospitals. Industrial electricians work in plants and factories on heavy machinery and high-voltage systems. There are also low-voltage electricians (data, security, fire alarm, AV), solar and EV-charger installers, and a separate-but-related path called lineman (the people up on the poles and high-voltage lines, who go through their own apprenticeship and, per BLS data, out-earn inside electricians on average).
Who hires you: electrical contractors (the most common employer), construction companies, factories and manufacturers, utilities, building maintenance departments, hospitals, schools, the government and military, and eventually yourself if you get a contractor license and start your own shop. Demand is real and steady. New construction, the push to electrify everything (EVs, solar, batteries, heat pumps), data centers, and an aging workforce retiring out all mean there is work for decades.
The honest part: this is real physical work, you have to respect electricity because it can kill you, and you start at the bottom doing grunt labor. But it is one of the few careers where you can start at 18 with a high school diploma, get paid the whole time you train, come out with zero student debt, and end up making six figures or running your own business.
A typical day
- Show up to a job site or shop early (often 6:30 to 7 AM), get the day's assignment, and load your truck or gang box with materials and tools.
- Read blueprints or electrical drawings to figure out where wires, outlets, switches, lights, and panels need to go.
- Run conduit (bending metal pipe to fit), pull wire through walls and ceilings, and mount boxes, panels, and fixtures.
- Make connections: stripping wire, terminating it onto outlets, switches, breakers, and devices, and torquing them to spec.
- Troubleshoot a problem: using a multimeter and voltage tester to find why a circuit is dead, tripping, or overheating, then fixing it.
- Drill, cut, and fish wire through finished walls without tearing up the whole place (in remodel and service work).
- Climb ladders, work on lifts, crawl through attics and crawlspaces, and dig trenches for underground runs.
- Coordinate with other trades on site (plumbers, HVAC, drywall, general contractors) so your rough-in is done before walls close up.
- Label panels, test circuits, and make sure everything is up to the National Electrical Code (NEC) before inspection.
- Clean up the work area, account for tools and materials, and write up what you did. If you are an apprentice, you also have class or homework on top of the workday.
Where you work
You work indoors and outdoors, on new construction and in existing buildings. New-build sites are dusty, loud, unfinished (no heat or AC yet), and sometimes muddy or freezing. Service and remodel work puts you in tight attics, crawlspaces, basements, and customers' homes. Industrial and utility work can mean plants, substations, and being outside in all weather. Expect a lot of standing, kneeling, climbing ladders, working overhead with your arms up, lifting 50-plus pounds, and getting into cramped spots. Most work is full-time, roughly 40 hours a week, often starting early. Overtime is common and pays time-and-a-half, and storm/outage and shutdown work can mean long days and night calls. Construction work can slow down in winter or in a bad economy, though maintenance and service jobs are steadier year-round. The biggest hazards are electrical shock and arc flash (which can be fatal), plus falls, cuts, and burns. The trade takes safety seriously because the dangers are real. Done right with proper lockout/tagout and PPE, it is managed risk, not reckless.
How to get in
The standard path is a registered apprenticeship: you get hired, get paid, work under a licensed electrician, and take classes on the side for 4-5 years until you can sit for your journeyman license exam. There is no required college, and the apprenticeship itself is free or close to it. The two main lanes are union (IBEW/NECA) and non-union/merit-shop (IEC, ABC). Some people start as a helper or laborer for an electrical contractor first and get sponsored into an apprenticeship from there.
Apply to your local Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (JATC) through the electrical training ALLIANCE. You take an aptitude test (math + reading), interview, and get ranked. Once in, you work for union contractors and attend related classroom instruction. Comes with strong pay scale, pension, and health benefits. This is the most structured, highest-benefit route.
Independent Electrical Contractors (IEC) and Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) run registered apprenticeships with member contractors. You get hired by a shop, work, and take night classes. Often easier to get into quickly and very common outside major union cities.
Get hired by a local electrical contractor as a helper or apprentice-laborer with no experience, learn on the job, and have them enroll you in a registered apprenticeship. A good way in if you can't wait for an application window or want to prove yourself first.
Attend a technical or trade school electrical program (a few months to ~2 years) to learn the basics and make yourself a stronger apprenticeship applicant. Helpful but optional. It does not replace the apprenticeship or licensing.
Apprenticeships
Length: 4-5 years. Inside Wireman (the common commercial/industrial track) is 5 years: about 8,000 hours of paid on-the-job training plus roughly 900-1,000 hours of classroom instruction (the exact classroom requirement varies by local). Residential and some merit-shop tracks run 3-4 years.
Earn while you learn: You are paid from day one and never pay tuition for the union track. You typically start at 40-50% of the local journeyman wage (often $17-$22/hour) and get a raise every 6-12 months (often about every 1,000 on-the-job hours) as you advance, reaching 80-90% of journeyman pay by your final year. You come out eligible to sit for your license with zero student debt and years of paid experience.

Often requires a master license plus proof of insurance/bonding and a business/law exam. This is what lets you legally run your own electrical company.
A short safety course (10 or 30 hours) covering job-site hazards, fall protection, and electrical safety. Cheap, fast, and a near-universal asset. Note: OSHA Outreach is voluntary training, not a government license.

Licensing

The near-universal pattern is three tiers: apprentice (registered, works under supervision), journeyman (licensed, works independently after roughly 8,000 hours and an exam), and master (supervises, pulls permits, designs systems). Minimum: High school diploma or GED. That is genuinely the floor to start an apprenticeship. Most programs want at least one year of high school algebra (some want Algebra II), and you typically must be 18.
Helps: A pre-apprenticeship program or a trade/technical school electrical certificate can help you pass the aptitude test and get hired faster, and sometimes counts toward your on-the-job hours. Community college electrical or electronics courses help too. None of this is required. Plenty of people start with no schooling beyond high school. Wires and services houses, apartments, and condos: panels, outlets, lighting, remodels, and service calls. Easiest to enter; pay sits at the lower end but service and own-business potential is good.
Wires offices, stores, schools, restaurants, and hospitals. More conduit and three-phase power, bigger jobs, steadier work than residential.
Maintains and installs systems in factories and plants: motors, motor controls, PLCs, and high-voltage gear. Higher pay, more troubleshooting, often shift work and shutdowns.
