What it pays

HVAC pays well for a trade you can enter without college debt, and it climbs fast once you can diagnose and work on your own. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics put the median wage for HVAC and refrigeration mechanics and installers at $59,810 a year ($28.75/hr) in May 2024, with the lowest 10% under $39,130 and the top 10% over $91,020. Specialized commercial, refrigeration, and union techs, plus those who own their own business, can clear six figures.

Big swings by region (high-cost metros and union markets pay more), by sector (commercial refrigeration and industrial controls pay more than basic residential), and by season (overtime in summer and the first freeze can add thousands). Many shops add commission/spiffs on parts and equipment sales, performance bonuses, take-home truck, tool allowance, and per-diem on travel jobs. Union (UA/SMART) scale often comes with strong health and pension benefits on top of wages.

What they do

HVAC stands for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning. Add an "R" (HVAC/R) and you've added Refrigeration, the coolers and freezers in grocery stores, restaurants, and warehouses. As an HVAC technician, you install, maintain, and repair the systems that control temperature, humidity, and air quality in homes and buildings. That means furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps, boilers, rooftop units, ductwork, thermostats, and walk-in coolers.

The work splits into two big buckets. Installation is putting in new equipment: setting the outdoor condenser, running copper line sets and electrical, hanging ductwork, charging the system with refrigerant. Service (also called maintenance and repair) is keeping existing systems running: diagnosing why a furnace won't fire, replacing a failed compressor, cleaning coils, finding a refrigerant leak, swapping a bad capacitor. New techs usually start on installation or as a maintenance helper, then move into service once they can diagnose on their own. Service is where the better money and the steadier year-round work tend to live.

Who hires you: residential and commercial HVAC contractors (the biggest employers by far), mechanical contractors on construction jobs, grocery and supermarket chains, hospitals and universities with their own facilities crews, property management companies, manufacturers, and equipment wholesalers. Plenty of experienced techs eventually go out on their own and run a one-truck business.

This is a real, in-demand trade with a low barrier to entry. You don't need a four-year degree. You do need to be good with your hands, comfortable with basic electrical and some math, willing to crawl into hot attics and tight crawl spaces, and able to learn the one federal credential the law requires: the EPA Section 608 card for handling refrigerant. The industry is also going through a big refrigerant change right now (R-410A is being phased out for lower-GWP A2L refrigerants like R-454B and R-32), which means techs who keep their skills current have an edge.

A typical day

  • Check your dispatch/route for the day on a phone or tablet, load parts and refrigerant onto the truck, and drive to the first call
  • Pull manifold gauges onto a system to read pressures, then use a multimeter to check voltage, amperage, and capacitors to find why a unit isn't cooling or heating
  • Recover refrigerant with a recovery machine before opening a sealed system (venting it is illegal), then braze in a new line or component, pull a vacuum, and recharge to the correct weight
  • Replace common failure parts: capacitors, contactors, blower motors, igniters, flame sensors, control boards, compressors, and TXVs (the valve that meters refrigerant)
  • Run a seasonal tune-up: clean condenser and evaporator coils, change filters, check refrigerant charge, test safety controls, and clear a clogged condensate drain
  • On install days, set the outdoor and indoor units, run and insulate copper line sets, make electrical connections, hang or seal ductwork, and start up and commission the system
  • Use a combustion analyzer on gas furnaces to check for safe operation and carbon monoxide, and an electronic leak detector to chase down refrigerant leaks
  • Write up the job: explain the problem to the homeowner in plain language, quote the repair, collect payment or get a signature, and log the work on the tablet
  • Keep your truck stocked and organized, and your EPA-rated recovery cylinders and A2L-compatible tools ready for the next call

Where you work

You work wherever the equipment is, and equipment lives in uncomfortable places: hot attics in summer, cold rooftops in winter, cramped crawl spaces, mechanical rooms, and behind buildings next to the condenser. Expect to be on your feet most of the day, climbing ladders, lifting equipment (a condenser or compressor can be heavy and awkward), kneeling, and reaching into tight spots. Residential techs drive a service van between several homes a day; commercial and new-construction techs may spend the whole day on one job site.

The job is seasonal in a real way. Summer (cooling season) and the first cold snap of winter are brutally busy, with long days, overtime, and on-call rotations. Spring and fall (the "shoulder seasons") are slower, which is when tune-up and maintenance contracts keep you working. Some companies lay off or cut hours for newer techs in slow stretches, though service-focused and commercial shops stay busier year-round.

Hazards are real: electrical shock, burns from brazing torches and hot surfaces, cuts from sheet metal, falls from ladders and roofs, refrigerant exposure and frostbite, carbon monoxide on gas appliances, and the strain of repetitive lifting and awkward positions. The newer A2L refrigerants (R-454B, R-32) are mildly flammable, so there are added safe-handling rules around brazing, ventilation, and leak detection. Full-time is standard, often 40-plus hours with overtime in peak season. Most service work is daytime, but emergency and commercial calls can mean nights, weekends, and being on call.

How to get in

There are three realistic ways in, and many people mix them. The cheapest and most common is to get hired as a helper or apprentice at an HVAC company and learn on the job while you study for your EPA 608 card. A registered apprenticeship pays you to learn with structured classroom training and a recognized credential at the end. Trade school gets you fundamentals and certifications faster but costs money. Whatever path you pick, the EPA Section 608 certification is the one credential you'll need to legally handle refrigerant, and you can earn it early and cheaply.

Apprenticeships

Earn while you learn: You're paid from day one as a percentage of the journeyworker wage, and it steps up as you log hours and pass coursework. First-year apprentices often start around 40-50% of journey scale and get raises roughly every 6-12 months, typically reaching 85-90% in the final year and full journeyworker pay (frequently $30-$45+/hr in union markets) when you complete the program. Union programs typically add health and pension benefits, and classroom training is usually tuition-free or low-cost.

How to find one: Search the U.S. Department of Labor finder at apprenticeship.gov (filter for HVAC/refrigeration in your area). Contact your local UA (United Association) or SMART (Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation) training center, the local Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) chapter for non-union programs, your state apprenticeship agency, and individual HVAC contractors directly (many run their own registered programs). Certifications

EPA Section 608 Technician Certification Required by federal law for anyone who maintains, services, repairs, or disposes of equipment that could release refrigerant. This is the single must-have credential in the trade. Comes in Type I (small appliances), Type II (high-pressure systems, the most common), Type III (low-pressure/chillers), and Universal (all three). Get Universal if you can.
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (tested through EPA-approved organizations such as ESCO Institute, Mainstream Engineering, and RSES)

A core exam plus a type-specific exam covering safe refrigerant handling, recovery, and the law. The certification never expires and needs no renewal. Often $20-$150 to test, and many trade programs include it.

EPA Section 609 Certification (Motor Vehicle A/C) Required only if you service air conditioning in cars or light trucks (motor vehicle AC). Common for techs who do automotive AC; not needed for pure building HVAC.

Specialty exams (air conditioning, heat pumps, gas furnaces, commercial refrigeration, etc.) that prove you actually know how to install and service systems. Widely seen as the gold-standard tech credential. Unlike the EPA card, NATE must be renewed every two years through continuing-education hours or re-testing.

HVAC Excellence Certifications Voluntary credential set used by many schools and employers, ranging from entry-level (student) to professional and master specialist. Good for proving competency, especially coming out of a training program.
HVAC Excellence (a division of the ESCO Group)

Employment-ready and professional-level certifications across electrical, heat pumps, gas heat, refrigeration, and more. Professional-level credentials are renewable on a set cycle.

Licensing

There is one federal requirement everywhere: the EPA Section 608 card to handle refrigerant. Beyond that, licensing is handled by states and sometimes cities/counties, and it varies a lot. Some states have no statewide HVAC license at all (it's left to cities, like Illinois), while many require a state contractor or technician license to do the work or pull permits. Roughly half the states have statewide HVAC licensing, often with a trade exam plus a business/law exam. Requirements differ on apprenticeship hours, experience years, and testing, so always check your specific state and city before you start working unsupervised or opening your own shop. NATE and EPA 608 do not replace a state's required trade exam.

It's not hype: the demand is steady rather than explosive, and pay and hours still swing with the seasons and the local construction market.

BLS projects employment of heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics and installers to grow about 8% from 2024 to 2034, faster than the average for all occupations, with roughly 40,100 openings per year over the decade (most coming from workers retiring or leaving the field rather than brand-new positions). Do I need a college degree to become an HVAC technician?
