Gas Fitter
You run, test, and repair the gas lines and appliances that heat homes and cook food. Get it wrong and people get hurt, so the trade pays for getting it right.

What it pays
Solid middle-class trade pay with strong upside once you are licensed. The federal government folds gas fitters into 'Plumbers, Pipefitters, and Steamfitters,' which had a median wage of $62,970 a year ($30.27/hr) in May 2024 per the BLS. Holding a gas license on top of plumbing or HVAC, working union scale, or doing emergency/utility service pushes you toward the top of the range.
Big swings by region and setup. Union scale (UA) plus health and pension is usually well above the open-shop rate. Overtime, emergency/after-hours service, and winter no-heat season add real money. Utility and pipeline gas distribution jobs often pay near the top and come with strong benefits. Cost of living matters: $35/hr goes a lot further in Oklahoma than in Boston or California, where wages are also higher. These are national reference ranges, not a guarantee for your area, so check local pay before you bank on a number.
What they do
A gas fitter installs, tests, repairs, and maintains the piping and appliances that carry natural gas and propane (LP). That means running the metal pipe (black iron) or flexible stainless tubing (CSST) from the gas meter or propane tank to a furnace, water heater, stove, fireplace, pool heater, dryer, or rooftop unit, then connecting and pressure-testing the whole system so it does not leak. When something breaks or smells like gas, the gas fitter is who finds the leak, shuts it down, and fixes it. It is a safety-critical trade: gas is invisible and explosive, so the work is heavily code-driven and inspected.
In a lot of the U.S., "gas fitter" is not a separate full-time job title. It is a license or certification that a plumber, pipefitter, or HVAC tech holds on top of their main trade. The federal government does not track "gas fitter" as its own occupation. The Bureau of Labor Statistics counts most of these workers under "Plumbers, Pipefitters, and Steamfitters," so that is where the official pay and job-growth numbers come from. But some states (Massachusetts, Maryland, Virginia, Louisiana, Alabama and others) DO issue a standalone gas fitter license with apprentice, journeyman, and master tiers, and in those places you can work as a dedicated gas fitter.
Who hires gas fitters: plumbing and HVAC contractors, propane and natural-gas utility companies, mechanical contractors on commercial and industrial jobs, home-builders, appliance-install companies, and facilities/maintenance departments at hospitals, factories, schools, and apartment complexes. Demand follows construction and home turnover plus the constant need to service and replace existing gas equipment, so the work does not dry up the way some trades do.
One thing to know before you commit: the rules are intensely local. The credential you need, the hours you log, and even the exam you sit are set by your state and sometimes your city or county. The work itself is similar everywhere, but the paperwork that lets you do it for pay is not, so step one is always pinning down your own state's path.
A typical day
- Get the day's work orders, load pipe, fittings, and tools onto the truck, and drive to the first job (a house, a job site, or a commercial building)
- Shut off and lock out the gas supply, then run new pipe: measure, cut, thread or join black iron pipe, or roll out and fit CSST (the yellow/black flexible stainless tubing) to a furnace, water heater, or range
- Pressure-test the line with a gauge or manometer (commonly held at or above working pressure for a set period the code or inspector requires) and check every joint for leaks with soap solution or an electronic gas detector
- Hook up and start an appliance: set the regulator, light it, check the flame, test combustion and venting, and make sure it is running safe
- Track down a reported leak or a no-heat call, diagnose it, and repair or replace the bad section, valve, or part
- Pull and meet permits and walk the inspector through the job so it passes code
- Clean up, log the work and parts used, and head to the next call (a busy day can be several stops)
Where you work
Mostly indoors but rough on the body. You will be in basements, crawl spaces, mechanical rooms, attics, and tight closets next to water heaters, and on new construction or commercial sites you will be on ladders, scaffolds, and rooftops. Expect kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting pipe and appliances (water heaters are heavy and awkward), and working with your hands overhead. Service and utility work means driving between jobs all day. Most work is daytime, Monday-Friday, but service techs and utility gas workers carry on-call and emergency shifts, because a gas leak or a no-heat call in winter cannot wait until Monday. Hazards are real and the reason the trade is licensed: gas is explosive and can asphyxiate you, you work around live appliances and electrical, and there is exposure to dust, sharp metal, hot surfaces, and confined spaces. Done by the book with the right detection equipment and lockout procedures, it is safe; cutting corners is what gets people hurt.
How to get in
The realistic way in is to learn on the job while getting paid, then earn a license. Most people get there one of three ways: a registered apprenticeship (best mix of pay and structure), trade school then a helper job, or hiring on directly as a helper with a plumbing/HVAC/propane company and working up. Gas fitting is almost always added on top of a base trade (plumbing, HVAC, or pipefitting), so you are usually learning that at the same time.
The gold standard: you earn a paycheck from day one while you learn on the job and take classroom instruction at night or in blocks. Most are run by the UA union (United Association) through local Joint Apprenticeship Training Committees (JATCs), or by open-shop groups like ABC and PHCC. You come out a licensed journeyman with little or no debt. Many programs let you pick a plumbing/pipefitting/gas track.
A 1-2 year plumbing or HVAC program teaches you the basics and the codes, then you hire on as an apprentice or helper to log the real-world hours a license requires. Faster classroom learning, but you pay tuition and still need on-the-job hours before you can get licensed.
Get hired by a plumbing, HVAC, mechanical, or propane company with no experience, carry pipe and learn from the licensed techs, and have them sign off on your hours. Then take the gas fitter exam when you qualify. No tuition, immediate paycheck, but it is less structured and depends on your employer actually training and documenting you. Make sure your hours are logged on paper from day one, because the license board will want proof.
Apprenticeships
Length: 4-5 years. UA (union) apprenticeships run about 5 years, split into ten periods (two per year) of roughly 1,700-2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training plus a minimum of about 216 hours of related classroom instruction each year.
Earn while you learn: You are paid from day one and get scheduled raises as you complete hours and classroom blocks. Apprentices commonly start around 40-50% of the journeyman wage and step up to full scale by the time they finish - so pay roughly doubles over the program. Union programs add health insurance and a pension on top.

Certifications
The core credential. A journeyman can do the hands-on gas work; a master can pull permits, run jobs, and supervise. Exact hours, exams, and even whether gas is a standalone license or rolled into plumbing/mechanical vary by state and sometimes city, so check your state's board and your local jurisdiction.
A short manufacturer course (Gastite's is about 1 hour online; some run longer) plus a quick exam that gets you an installer card. CSST can only be installed by a trained, carded installer, and you often need the card just to purchase the product, so this is a common practical add-on.
Module-based propane safety and skills training (starting with Basic Principles and Practices of Propane) with written exams and hands-on skills assessments. Heavily used by propane companies in rural and off-grid markets.
A federal certification (under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act, 40 CFR Part 82) to handle refrigerants. Not a gas credential per se, but many gas techs who also do HVAC need it. Common and inexpensive to obtain, and it does not expire.
Task-specific qualification proving you can safely perform 'covered tasks' on a pipeline and recognize and react to abnormal conditions. Each operator defines its own covered-task list, so the exact tasks vary by employer. This is the credential for the higher-paying utility/distribution side of gas work.
Licensing
Gas work is licensed because it is dangerous, and the rules are set at the STATE (and sometimes city/county) level, not federally. In many states the gas fitter license is its own thing with apprentice, journeyman, and master tiers; in others, gas work is bundled into the plumbing or mechanical (HVAC) license. You generally qualify by registering as an apprentice, logging documented on-the-job hours under a licensed master, completing required course hours, then passing a written exam. Always check your specific state board AND your local city/county, because requirements differ a lot.

Education
Minimum: High school diploma or GED. That is the standard requirement to enter an apprenticeship and to qualify for most state gas licenses. You need solid basic math (fractions, measurement, simple geometry) because you are sizing pipe and reading pressures.
Helps: A trade-school, community-college, or technical-program certificate in plumbing, HVAC, or pipefitting gives you a head start and, in some states (like Virginia), can shorten the experience hours you need before you can sit for the license exam. Welding skills are a big plus for commercial and industrial pipe work.

Job outlook
Steady and reliable. Gas fitting rides with the plumbing/pipefitting trades, which the BLS projects to grow 4% from 2024 to 2034, about as fast as the average for all jobs. The bigger story is replacement: about 44,000 openings a year are projected across plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters, mostly to replace people who retire or leave. The skilled-trades workforce is aging and not enough young people are coming in, so trained, licensed gas workers are in demand.
BLS projects 4% growth (2024-2034) for plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters, with roughly 44,000 openings per year over the decade. That 4% is 'about as fast as average,' not a boom, so the real pull is replacement demand, not explosive new hiring. Note: some markets are pushing electrification (heat pumps, electric stoves) which could soften new gas-appliance installs long-term, but the huge existing base of gas furnaces, water heaters, and propane systems still needs service, repair, and code-required work for decades. Propane (rural and off-grid) and utility/pipeline gas work are especially durable.

Is 'gas fitter' a real standalone job or part of plumbing?

What's the difference between gas fitting and just being a plumber?
A lot of overlap, and many people do both. Plumbing centers on water and drain systems; gas fitting centers on fuel-gas piping and appliances and carries its own safety stakes and (in many states) its own license. Because gas is explosive, the gas side is more code-driven and inspected, and the credential is often a separate add-on you earn on top of a plumbing or HVAC base.
