What they do
A pipefitter (often just called a "fitter") lays out, assembles, welds, installs, and repairs the pipe that carries things under pressure or at high temperature: steam, hot and cold water, fuel gas, compressed air, acids, oil, and process chemicals. This is different from a plumber, who mostly handles the water-supply and drain pipe in homes and small buildings. Pipefitters work on the bigger, tougher, higher-pressure stuff in industrial and commercial settings. You read a blueprint or an isometric drawing (a 3-D-style sketch of a pipe run), measure and cut pipe, bevel and fit the ends, tack it in place, and either bolt it together with flanges or weld it solid. - Clean up your work area, account for tools, restock material for tomorrow, and fill out time and progress reports.
- On a maintenance or turnaround day: lock out and tag out (LOTO) a live system, drain it, cut out a failed section of pipe or a bad valve, and weld in a replacement, often inside a tight, hot, or elevated space.

Pipefitters work indoors and outdoors, at ground level and high in the air, and often in cramped, dirty, hot, or loud spots.
