What they do

This is different from a plumber, who mostly handles the water-supply and drain pipe in homes and small buildings. Pipefitters work on the bigger, tougher, higher-pressure stuff in industrial and commercial settings. You read a blueprint or an isometric drawing (a 3-D-style sketch of a pipe run), measure and cut pipe, bevel and fit the ends, tack it in place, and either bolt it together with flanges or weld it solid. Pipefitters work indoors and outdoors, at ground level and high in the air, and often in cramped, dirty, hot, or loud spots.
